“They thought they could take Harambe down…they were wrong. Join Harambe as he uncovers the true motive behind his assassination attempt!” the game’s description reads. For those unfamiliar, Harambe was a 17-year-old Western lowland gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. The animal was fatally shot in May to rescue a three-year-old who fell into a zoo enclosure where he was grabbed and dragged by Harambe. The tragic killing of the gorilla led to a public backlash with many questioning if the animal should’ve been killed and others demanding the toddler’s parents to be held accountable. The incident has also resulted in a slew of viral internet memes and tributes to Harambe, the video game being the latest one. Harambe vs. Capcom is an unusual game to say the least and yet the story is interesting. In this game, the gorilla has psychic powers and is forced underground when he is warned that some “shadow agency” wants him dead. As a result, Harambe decides to fake his own death and prove himself against Ryu, who will then lead him to the airport to escape to Africa in a bid to fix this.
According to Polygon, Harambe vs. Capcom weighs 352 MB in size, and is available to download for free. It boasts a roster of 21 characters, out of which three are “mystery characters” that can only be unlocked by progressing through the game. Evil Ken, Urien Hugo and Shin Vega also guest star.
